Through The Lens

One of the most influential ways of storytelling in modern day is film making. Using the art of film as a lens for my research, I wanted to explore how advancements in technology and it’s rapid evolution affects us and our lives.

Is the rapid evolution of technology a bad thing? Well no... but things will change. A simple way to discuss this is by explaining how photography was introduced. In 1839, it changed the art world forever. Sparking curiosity of the new medium among many, it also created confusion and outrage. It’s predecessor, painting, was now deemed excessive. It forced artists to change their perspective on what it meant to represent reality. As a direct response, we saw the birth of Impressionism, which was a direct denial of realism and an embrace of abstraction. By the mid 1800s, photography was heavily relied upon by painters. Instead of making your model stand for hours, you could capture them in the moment and work slowly. It was very popular but some artists wouldn’t admit to using the new medium and clung to tradition. Moving into the modern day, it’s fair to say that AI art making technology will severely change how we see artistry. It’s the new biggest scare for artists wondering if their livelihoods will become obsolete. Unfortunately, it’s likely that AI will take a few jobs that can be streamlined. But it will also increase the value of human made art. In order to coexist with AI we must see it as a tool to further our own means. Adapting, innovating, and over coming will help us move on to the next great thing in evolution.

An Afternoon Trip Through the Galaxy

For this project I made a 3D foam timeline, information posters, and a short film called “An Afternoon Trip Through the Galaxy,” in order to talk about talk about the evolution of technology in film and also try them out the techniques for myself.

Early Concepts
and Research

When prepping for this large project many ideas and concepts were scraped. I eventually ended up combining a few ideas. The clash of rapid technology development and how it’s implemented in film seemed to interest me the most. My early research mostly focused on the special effects area of film and the pioneers of their craft.

Pictured on the right is a mashup I did that highlights early special effects techniques such as matte painting, puppetry, and stop motion.
